First foods 4-6 months: Tips and ideas

We started feeding Lewis solids a bit after he turned 4 months. He loved it from the first mouthful, and is still a big eater.  Baby Love was very helpful in telling you how to introduce solids and when to introduce certain things, but I thought it might be helpful to others to tell you how we did it. So here goes:

First month: We started with rice cereal (Bellamy's) mixed with a bit of formula once a day. We very slowly built up the amount, from a teaspoon to a few tablespoons. After about 2 weeks we introduced a small second meal, consisting of a mashed vegetable (ie. pumpkin, sweet potato or carrot) or mashed avocado. Lewis loves avocado. So it is pretty simple for the first few months. We did a road trip in this period and it was really easy. Rice cereal before we left the motel in the morning, then avocado in the afternoon while on the road.

I never blended things to a puree, as I think it's good for the babies to like textures from the start. You can just mash by hand, or use a stick blender.

Second month: I started adding more vegetables to the repertoire, and mixing different vegetables together. I also started adding pureed fruit to the rice cereal. As they don't eat much, it is sensible to make a batch and freeze it into cubes. Lewis would eat 2 cubes (approximately 2 tablespoons) at each meal. So in the freezer I had cubes of:

  • pureed apple and pear,
  • blended broccoli, zucchini and squash
  • blended pumpkin, sweet potato and carrot
  • blended potato, broccoli, pumpkin (any mixed veg)
As he's gotten a bit older, the cubes are still similar but I've added legumes, grains, pasta etc. But that's another post.
